Calliope to Present Movie and Media Works
to Benefit the Forbes House Museum

02/06/10 – BOSTON, MA – Calliope, Boston’s collaborative choral/orchestral ensemble, will present Movie and Media Works on Saturday, February 6th, 2010 at 7:30 PM at Old West Church, 131 Cambridge Street, Boston, MA.  Individual tickets for this performance can be purchased for $40 (premium seating), $35 (general admission), and $25 (seniors and students) in advance through Calliope’s website: www.calliopemusic.org or by calling 617-759-2057, as well as at the door on the day of the performance.  Discounted rates are available for groups of 10 or more.  Old West Church is T accessible.  In addition, parking is available for 50 cents with a validated parking ticket at the Charles River Plaza underground garage.

A wide variety of music has been featured in films throughout the years.  Movie and Media Works will include a sampling of these pieces, along with the premiere presentation of an original film featuring the Forbes House Museum.  The program is planned to open with Joplin’s The Entertainer, Faure’s Cantique de Jean Racine, Great is Thy Faithfulness (as arranged by Calliope member Michael Pressley for brass quintet), and excerpts from Handel’s Judas Maccabeus, Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, and Mozart’s Requiem, Mass in c minor, and Die Entführung aus dem Serail.  The program will continue with Bach’s Wachet Auf, Gershwin’s I got Rhythm, Catalani’s Ebben?  Ne andro lontana, and selections from “The Sound of Music.”  An original film produced by Michael Lynch from Milton Public Access Television, featuring the Forbes House Museum, and accompanied by Calliope’s rendition of Death Be Not Proud, music written by Berklee College of Music student Alec Decrosta, will close the program.  There also will be a pre-concert talk with Mr. Decrosta.

The Forbes House Museum at 216 Adams Street in Milton, MA provides educational and cultural opportunities to a growing and diverse community.  The museum fosters an understanding and appreciation of the 19th and early 20th centuries through exploration of the Forbes family’s interests, activities, and their contributions to the global economy and the American China Trade.  In addition, it maintains an extensive collection of Abraham Lincoln memorabilia.  Benefit dollars will support the museum’s dedication to the preservation and care of the collections, buildings, and grounds of this historic property.  For more information on the Forbes House Museum visit www.forbeshousemuseum.org.

Directed by its founder, Julia O’Toole, Calliope is a nonprofit, volunteer music organization of over 50 singers and instrumentalists serving Boston and surrounding communities, which seeks to encourage collaboration between musicians, promote positive social change, and inspire young people to become listeners and participants in the world of music.  Calliope’s musicians bring a great variety of choral and instrumental training and experience to their music making.  Many also perform with such organizations as Back Bay Chorale, Berkshire Choral Festival, Boston Opera Collaborative, Cambridge Community Chorus, Cambridge Symphony Orchestra, Civic Symphony, Commonwealth School Orchestra, Charles River Wind Ensemble, Dedham Choral Society, Devil Music Ensemble, Elizabeth Seton Academy, Greater Boston Flute Consortium, Mass Theatrica, Masterworks Chorale, Metropolitan Wind Symphony, New England Conservatory, Newton Choral Society, Northeastern Choral Consortium, OperaHub, Oriana Consort, Sharon Community Chamber Orchestra, Tanglewood Festival Chorus, The Jumblies, and Willow Flute Ensemble.  All soloists featured on this program are members of Calliope.

Since graduating from Boston University with a BFA in vocal performance, Ms. O’Toole has studied conducting with Scott Allen Jarrett and voice with Brett Johnson, Daniel Wyneken, Sharon Daniels and Jonathan Barnhart. Julia is a voice teacher who instructs singers of all ages. Her studio includes adults and students at several private area high schools. She also substitutes as conductor for local organizations.
